P is for Planting

So, it's nearly that time!  Once the challenge is over, I will once again start documenting my garden.  This afternoon, the boys and I finished pulling up all the late fall growth that I let go last year and suddenly came to life in the last 2 weeks and because really beastly!  Next step is to get some compost down in the beds and get it all soil turned up and loose.  We're actually going to try to do everything from seed this year!  In the past, I've tried to create a whole learning experience with starting seeds in cups inside, waiting till they were big enough, moving them outside for a bit before putting them in the ground, but they never make the transition and I end up at the store buying plants to start with.  Last year we did some things from seeds and didn't too mad, so I think we'll just give it all a try this year........except tomatoes.....my dad always says not to try to start tomatoes from seed.....if I wanted to do that I would have had to have started them a while ago too get hem where they need to be at this time of April in order to get fruit off of them for the summer.  I definitely won't be doing the topsy turvy thing this year.  Tried it, failed.  I really don't have a place to hang it anyway.  So, what are you growing this year?  Anything different?  Any tried and true tricks you can share?

  1. I do not have green fingers at all. In fact, I kill everything that enters our home - agriculturally, of course.

I have an orchid that I've had for a month and I'm surprised its still blossoming.

  3. Transplanting the seedlings always gets me too. I do better with flowers/plants that are established.

    1. So, here's a dumb question. Is your school year flipped as well so you can enjoy the warm weather in the "winter" months?

  7. I eagerly started my seeds in pots a few weeks ago. Now that it is warmish in eastern Oregon I started putting the trays out in the sun during the day. Yesterday I forgot to bring them inside until about 11:00PM...and we got below freezing. Oh no!!! I've only got three cucumbers struggling to survive. Guess I need to go to the garden store so I'll be able to fill up my rows.

    1. Good luck with your plants! I started mine too early last year, they froze and died and then we had a massive heat wave and my second set of plants literally turned black. Third set did well, though!

    1. hmm...effectively....i guess i could be better at it if i took time as well, over the past few years, i generally just buy what looks good and hope for the best. trial and error........such as don't plant pumpkins next to cucumbers........you just end up with nasty orange cucumbers.

  11. It's refreshing to hear folks talk about gardening the old fashion way...tilling, composting and seeding....except for tomatoes of course. Good luck with your garden this year. I hope you live in an area where there is plenty of water. Shortage of that is why I'm not gardening this year. Nice post, and I love your background, too.

Visiting via the 'Q' post on AtoZ...new follower, too.

    1. I tend not to water like some others i know......i figure the farmers don't get out and water the crops and yet stuff grows, so i'll just let nature do what it's going to do, they are plants after all. I guess if it got too dry, i'd give it some attention. My hubby keep rain barrels full for these occasions. Thank you for following! I'll check out your blog too.

  12. My flower garden is just starting to produce - so I too will be including those images in my posts.

I never have much luck with seeds. I spend more than I would if I just bought the plant.

  15. Ah great minds, I've been thinking of planting as well, wish the peas were already in, but they are not - boo. Cilantro started in the window, bought a 6 pack of brocoli because I wanted some instant gratification - came by from the A to Z - thanks for the fun post, enjoyed it
